AI visibility

AI visibility is how often AI answers point people to your site.

Each project has a fixed set of questions, the kind a buyer would ask about what the site offers, grouped into topics. They are drafted when the project is created and stay the same from run to run, so every reading grades the site against the same questions. They are listed on the AI Visibility page, under “Questions this score is out of”.

Each question is put to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, with web search on where the engine supports it, so the answer reflects what it finds today and not only what it learned in training. Each question is also searched on Google to read the AI Overview, when Google shows one.

An answer can include your site in two ways:

  • Cited: the answer links your domain as a source.
  • Named: the answer mentions your brand in its text, with or without a link.

A citation is the stronger signal, because it sends people to you. The citation rate counts only citations. AI visibility counts either.

  • Citation rate: the share of measured answers that cited your domain.
  • AI visibility: the share of measured answers that cited or named you.
  • Average position: where your domain usually sits among an answer’s sources. 1 is first.
  • Answers measured: answers that came back with text or a citation. Every rate on the page is out of this number.

The full list is in the metrics glossary.

AI visibility is measured again on the project’s automatic refresh schedule (weekly or monthly), or when you run it by hand. A single run is a sample: AI answers vary from one asking to the next, so read the trend across runs rather than one reading.
